The mountain range Avarice in which it was formed stands as being
the tallest mountain range in lower Sosaria.
A million generations ago, in the times of Sosaria's creation the mountains
began to crack and fall apart from the
forces of nature and the great mining of the Orcish Empire. As the Orcs
dug deeper into the mountains they
discovered more than just the precious minerals that they dug for within
the cracks and caverns. They
found gigantic caves and rock formations under the ground, whole rivers
and lakes nestled in caverns of
spectacular beauty.
As the Orcs continued to burrow into Avarice the need for
supplies and reinforcements to the miners
became far too great to be transported constantly from the surface. They
began to construct facilities with in
the caves. Huge feeding areas and dormitories sprang up along with kitchens,
armouries, stables and what ever
else they fancied. The huge new complex became a focus trading station
for the Orcish Empire; Orcs with in
the caves became richer and richer.
Primarily, the caves were named after the great Orcish warlord
Covu'tice who first discovered them. Over the
years the name changed to suit the new Orcish languages and accents
forming. Eventually they came to be
known as Covetous. Few Orcs spoke the languages of old and upheld
the old traditions, so new ideals and
frightening social streaming took over. The Orcs were a rapidly
modernizing race.
The new furnishings and facilities were nearing an all over completion,
but due to the lack of an heir when the emperor died the orcish empire
sunk into a great civil war.
Large tribes broke off the now collapsing empire
to form separate tribal communities, each with the idea that their leader
was a true warlord that should be named the new
emperor.
Trade amongst the orcs became greatly severed and Orcish
caravan routes fell victim to renegade
orc bands trying to disrupt the opposition or just find an easy wealth.
The city of covetous was completely cut
off for many generations, yet it survived where as the others did not.
The Orcs within the mines had changed
to suite their new environment perfectly. Their skin turned darker to
help them hunt the creatures in the lower levels of the
complex and their language changed also to that of a completely different
nature. Huge wars raged outside the very entrance of the caves and yet the miners continued to live
their new found lives. The fall of the empire
was to be the undoing of the Orcs if covetous had not stood strong. The
tribes of Orcs almost entirely
wiped out from eons of warring fell apart and drifted into the woods
to shelter from the new threat of the
humans. After time Orcs within Covetous became unsettled and
groups broke away peacefully to try their luck
in new areas of Sosaria.
Covetous finally lost its once gruesome gleam
and settled down to a miserable life beneath the rocks. The Orcish
Empire was broke, and now there were too
many languages and traditions that stood in the way of a new empire.
They turned into the snarling distraught
beasts they have come to be, and shall no doubt remain. For the first
time in countless generations the Mountain
Orcs start to leave the familiar walls of Covetous to carry out raids
upon nearby towns as there supplies run low
and their gold stash dwindles.
The now powerful Human race, still growing in size and ignorance, started
to test their new found courage upon the Orcs. Teams of adventurers would
seek fame and fortune by testing their luck in the dank interiors of Covetous.
Even though the mighty cave have been violated by humans and raped of her
once bountiful mineral veins by the Orcs, Covetous still remains a monument
to the once dominant race.
They shall no doubt leave their mark on the minds of Sosaria as long
as memory exists.
